VON DER LEYEN’S ROCKY PATH TO CONFIRMATION

Ursula von der Leyen learns on Tuesday (16 July) whether the European Parliament is ready to approve her bid to become the first female president of the European Commission.

If she is to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker in Brussels’ top job, she will need an absolute majority, which would normally be 376. The assembly is currently four members short, however, which means she may need 374 votes from a total of 747.

PRESSING DEMAND FOR RARE METALS

Demand for cobalt, lithium and copper for energy storage batteries, batteries for electric vehicles but also wind turbines and solar panels is exploding. The ecological transition is changing us from a dependence on hydrocarbons to a dependence on metals necessary to generate, transport and store electricity. It is not only electric vehicle batteries that consume these metals, but the whole range of electricity generators, particularly those for climatic electricity, but also interconnections, and finally batteries.

THE CASE OF DISINFORMATION

PUBLIC DIPLOMACY CHALLENGES FOR RUSSIA

Russian officials have become increasingly aware of their public diplomacy problem. Hence, over the past decade, Kremlin as well as the Russian academic community has started paying increasing attention – both in word and by deed – to Russia’s image and perceptions abroad. This concern has become even more salient due to Russia’s aspiration to a “Global Power” status and the need to be recognized as such, not just by its traditional “allies” but more importantly, by the West.

THE ROLE OF THE EU FOREIGN MINISTER

The EU’s foreign and security policy and its security and defence policy are both works in progress still, and a bit of “work in regress” at the same time. The demands of Nominee Josep Borrell as High Representative will be high if the goals laid out in the Treaty on European Union are to be taken seriously.

WATER CHALLENGES IN EUROPE

Overall in Europe water use is characterized by 65% ground water, 35% surface water, and a very small amount from the desalination of salt water.

The total surface water and ground water use by different sectors in Europe is 64% agriculture, 20% energy, 12% public supply and 4% industry.

In Europe alone 14 million do not have access to basic drinking water source. 17% of Europe’s territory and at least 11% of the population has been affected by water scarcity.
